About Global Risk Institute
The GRI was founded in 2011 as a result of an idea conceived by Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England and Jim Flaherty, former Canadian Minister of Finance. There were sixteen founding financial institutions, with the Governments of Canada, Ontario, TD Bank Group and Manulife Financial acting as the core architects.
GRI is the premier organization that defines thought leadership in risk management for the financial industry globally. It brings together leaders from industry, academia, and government to draw actionable insights on emerging risks globally
We are a member services organisation, with a current total of 32 members.
Our three main goals:
- Improve risk management in the financial services sector
- Deepen and broaden our collective understanding of financial risk through research, education, and training
- Develop practical strategies for our members to better manage risk and return

Founded by the public and private sectors in Canada and now expanding internationally, our mandate is to develop applied and integrative research in financial risk and enhance risk education for organizations around the world.

to risk professionals
Through engagement activities with our members, we build integrated risk management capacity for private and public sector risk professionals. We also act as a hub, stimulating evidence-based debate between regulators, practitioners and academics engaged in risk.
