Global Risk Institute to Sponsor PIMS Summer School and Workshop
21 July 2014
The Global Risk Institute in Financial Services (GRI) is proud to announce that it will be sponsoring the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) Summer School and Workshops in Vancouver, British Columbia, between July 21 and 30, 2014.
The theme of this year’s meeting is “The Economics and Mathematics of Systemic Risk.” As the financial crisis of 2008 and the Flash Crash of 2010 have demonstrated, the financial networks underlying the world’s economy have failed in the past and may do so again with catastrophic consequences. Understanding how financial markets generate and propagate risk, and how regulations can help to mitigate that risk, is vital to lowering the chance of future financial meltdowns.
Between July 28 and 30, a workshop for academics and industry will be held featuring 15 presentations by top mathematicians, industry representatives and regulators to enable these parties to share their views on the mathematics of systemic risk. Speakers at this workshop will include Matheus Grasselli and Tom Hurd of McMaster University, whose work is financially supported by GRI.
