GRI Recommends Financial Sector-Specific Approach to AI Risks
Canada’s recently launched AI for All Strategy (2026) provides a strong, forward-looking foundation to position the country as a global leader in artificial intelligence, anchored in trust, innovation, and sovereignty. The Global Risk Institute (GRI) acknowledges strengths of the federal government’s bold and ambitious strategy, and highlights opportunities to enhance implementation of the strategy through clear governance, strong regulatory mechanisms, and a sector-specific focus, particularly in financial services.
In this briefing, GRI highlights the critical role of the financial sector as both an early adopter of AI and a proven model for managing complex, system-level risks. With its established regulatory frameworks, global reputation for stability, and significant investment in AI, the sector is uniquely positioned to help shape practical governance, resilience, and oversight mechanisms as AI adoption scales. GRI recommends building on the foundation set out in the AI for All Strategy by strengthening governance clarity, enhancing system-wide risk management, and explicitly recognizing financial services as a systemically important sector in Canada’s AI landscape.
